US Postal Service Postage Rates

When ShipitAPO mails out a package on behalf of its Members, postage is charged at published U.S. Postal Service rates. See rate details below. Our Pennsylvania package processing facility is strategically located to service those from Military States AA and AE. Our California package processing facility is strategically located to service those from Military State AP.

Reminder

The only way to get packages to an APO/FPO/DPO address is via the U.S. Postal Service. This means that ALL size, weight and content restrictions must be adhered to in order for a package to be mailed out. While each APO/FPO/DPO has its own specific set of Zip Code Restrictions, in general no package can exceed 70 pounds, be larger than 130 inches when you add the length (always the longest side) and the girth, or contain prohibited items (flammables, air conditioners, etc.).

NOTE: ANY APO/FPO/DPO ZIP CODE SIZE OR WEIGHT RESTRICTION ALWAYS SUPERCEDES THE NORMAL WEIGHT LIMIT OF 70 POUNDS AND NORMAL SIZE LIMIT OF 130 INCHES (length + girth). Please see your local Postmaster for further details.

Postage Rates are based on both size and weight

The United States Postal Service postage rates, which went into effect January 18, 2009 brought with them many fundamental changes as to how postage for a package is determined. These changes, which carry forward to all future postage rate changes, subsequently affect how ShipitAPO handles and processes packages to ensure compliance with these new Postal regulations.

As postage rates change, these links will be updated as the USPS transitions from Rate Case terminology to actual/effective rates.

Shape-based Pricing

While postage has always been determined based on the weight of a package and the distance it traveled before being delivered using a "Zone" structure, the new postage rates now couple the "Zone distance" with the shape and size of a package. There are eight (8) postal Zones, each one a predetermined distance from the point of origin to the destination, Zone 1 being the shortest distance, Zone 8 the longest.

Balloon Rate: Packages addressed for delivery in Zones 1-4 (including Local) for mail class Priority Mail and all Zones for mail class Parcel Post that weigh less than 20 pounds but measure more than 84 inches (and not more than 108 inches) in combined length and girth (where girth is the measurement all the way around the thickest part of the parcel) are charged the applicable zone rate for a 20-pound parcel (balloon rate).

Dimensional Weight: Packages addressed for delivery in Zones 5-8 for mail class Priority Mail that measure more than 1 cubic foot in volume will be charged the higher of their actual weight and a dimensional weight. The dimensional weight is the volume of the parcel divided by 194 and rounded up.

Oversized Parcel Post: Packages that exceed 108 inches in postal dimension but do not exceed 130 inches in postal dimension (where the length cannot exceed 72 inches) are considered oversized and can only be mailed as oversized Parcel Post as long as they do not exceed 70 pounds. Postage for oversized Parcel Post is a flat rate, independent of weight, priced per Zone. See rate Parcel Post rate table.

To ensure compliance with these shape-based postage requirements, ShipitAPO has to measure each package so affected. These dimensions are entered into our package processing system; a proprietary system that incorporates the USPS certified "PC postage" services of Endicia to determine the proper postage for each package we mail out. Accordingly, you will note "Balloon," "Dimensional" and "Oversize" on ShipitAPO invoices when those types of postage rates are determined to be applicable.

Balloon Rate Postage

Priority Mail: Zones 1-4
Parcel Post: All Zones

1. Measure the length, width, and height in inches. Round each measurement to the nearest whole inch.
2. Add the length (always the longest side) and the girth: 21 +(20+20+20+20) = 101".
3. If the result exceeds 84" but does not exceed 108", the package falls into the balloon rate category. Balloon weight is 20lbs.
4. The postage rate is based upon the actual weight or the balloon rate weight, whichever is greater.

Dimensional Weight Postage

Priority Mail: Zones 5-8
Parcel Post: N/A

1. Measure the length, width, and height in inches. Round each measurement to the nearest whole inch.
2. Multiply the length (always the longest side) x height x width: (21 x 20 x 20) = 8,400 cubic inches.
3. If the result exceeds 1,728 cubic inches, divide the result by 194 and round up to nearest whole number to determine the dimensional weight in pounds: (8,400/194 = 43.29) 43.29 is rounded up to the next pound of 44lbs.
4. The postage rate is based upon the actual weight or the dimensional weight, whichever is greater.

1. Measure the length, width, and height in inches. Round each measurement to the nearest whole inch.
2. Multiply the length (always the longest side) x height x width: (30 x 9 x 18) = 4,860 cubic inches.
3. Multiply the result by an adjustment factor of 0.785: 4,860 x 0.785 = 3,815.1 cubic inches.
4. If the final results exceeds 1,728 cubic inches, divide the result by 194 and round up the nearest whole number to determine the dimensional weight in pounds: (3,815.1/194 = 19.66) 19.66 rounded up to the next pound is 20lbs.
5. The rate is based upon the actual weight or dimensional weight, whichever is greaer.
6. If the dimensional weight exceeds 70lbs, the package pays the 70lb. rate.

Oversized Parcel Post

Priority Mail: N/A
Parcel Post: All Zones

1. Measure the length, width, and height in inches. Round each measurement to the nearest whole inch.
2. Add the length and the girth: 31 + (20 + 20 + 20 + 20) = 110".
3. If the result exceeds 108" but does not exceed 130", the package falls into the Oversized Parcel Post rate category. The postage is a flat rate (Zone dependent) regardless of weight, but the weight cannot exceed 70lbs.
4. The rate is based upon destination Zone.

Note: Oversized Parcel Post packages usually take a very long time to be delivered. While the MPSA indicates a 30-day delivery timeframe, we see more like 6-8 weeks. Please do not associate long delivery times with ShipitAPO. We are at the mercy of the U.S. Postal Service and MPSA, just like everyone else.

Handling Fees

Membership

There are two membership types - Basic & Premier.

Basic Membership offers an a la carte, pay as you go type of service. Our Basic Membership account has no registration fee or annual fee. When you register with ShipitAPO, you automatically become a Basic Member. Upgrading to Premier Membership is optional and can be done at any time from our Members Area.

Premier Membership offers a combination of reduced normal handling fee rates, discounted special handling fees and some optional services remain free. Also, included is $100.00 worth of insurance coverage on all packages at no additional charge. However, it is for PERSONAL USE only. Any business, institutional, government, corporate or non-profit Members, using our service for non-personal use, are NOT ELIGIBLE for Premier Membership.

The annual Premier Membership fee is $60.00. Once you enroll as a Premier Member you cannot downgrade until the end of "membership year." You can of course, opt not to re-enroll. On your anniversary date, when we attempt to renew your Premier Membership, if you have opted not to re-enroll as a Premier Member prior to your anniversary date, your account will automatically revert to Basic membership, which is free. Successful Premier Membership enrollment begins when the Premier Membership account fee is paid in full. The Premier Membership fee is non-refundable. We may elect to close Premier Membership enrollment at any time.

When ShipitAPO processes a package for forwarding via the U.S. Postal Service, here is what we do:

1. Upon delivery by the incoming shipping carrier, we sign for packages as required and inspect every one.
2. We identify the "owner" of each packages against our database.
3. We weight it, determine the correct postage and affix it to the package.
4. We charge your billing profile the balance of the total postage plus any optional insurance fees and the ShipitAPO handling fee.
5. A new address label is created which contains the destination address on record in your account profile, along with a US Postal Service Delivery Confirmation number.
6. We affix the new label to the package.
7. We complete the appropriate Customs form and affix this form to your package as well.
8. Once completed, we update your account and send you an email notification and get the packages into the hands of the US Postal Service for delivery to your forwarding address.

A note on fees

Packages that cannot be immediately processed for forwarding and mailed out are called problem packages and they result when the package cannot mailed due to size, weight or contents or when a Member cannot pay for our services for whatever reason when we attempt to process a package or chooses not to have a package forwarded to an APO/FPO address due to issues with a merchant, "buyer's remorse," etc. We experience time-consuming tasks associated with trying to get things sorted out with and for the Member who had such a package shipped to their ShipitAPO address. Rather than implement across-the-board handling fee increases to offset our expenses associated with these specific problem packages, which would impact all of our Members, even those who never attempt to ship problem packages or who have payment problems, we have decided to charge the following fees when we receive a package that cannot be mailed due to merchant conflicts, mind changing about an order, lack of payment, size, weight or contents.

You can avoid these fees and any associated delays in package forwarding by not having non-mailable packages sent to your ShipitAPO address and being able to pay for our services when payment is due.

Insurance Fees

US Postal Service Insurance Rates

The purchase of insurance is completely optional. You may elect to purchase insurance coverage at the rates detailed below. These rates are the U.S. Postal Service's published rates. However, please note that ShipitAPO uses a 3rd-party insurance carrier that provides equal coverage as that provided by the USPS. You can change this amount at any time, even on a per-package basis, so that you always have the right amount of coverage on all your packages. Should you want to purchase insurance, just set your account insurance preferences to how much coverage you want. Based on your account settings, you will be charged the cost of insurance as we process your package at the following rates:

NOTE: Claims must be submitted to ShipitAPO within 85-days of the shipment date but no earlier than 45-days if claiming loss; 60-days for packages mailed Parcel Post. Email and fax submissions are acceptable to meet deadline dates but hard copies with original signatures are required to be submitted unless otherwise instructed during the claims process.
